Improving the return on R&D investments

6º Hackathon Cassini: Space for International Development & Humanitarian Aid

What are the Cassini Hackathons?

CASSINI Hackathons & Mentoring are part of the CASSINI initiative of the European Commission, which seeks to promote entrepreneurship within the Space sector.

They are a series of six hackathons that over three years address global challenges using space technologies.

These hackathons bring together young professionals, students, researchers, and entrepreneurs interested in software, data, design, and business to create innovative solutions using Earth observation data, satellite positioning technologies, and satellite communications.

The winners of each hackathon get access to the CASSINI Mentoring program.

How does it work?

The 6th CASSINI Hackathon will take place from November 3 to 5, 2023, simultaneously in 10 locations in Europe. Hundreds of participants will test their skills and work on three common challenges focused on international development and humanitarian aid.

The organization in our country will be in charge of KIM, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya – IEEC and Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya – ICGC.

Previous Hackathons

4º Hackathon Cassini: Space for the Financial World

This event, entitled “Space for the Financial World”, took place from November 4 to 6, 2022, in person and virtually, in 10 European locations simultaneously.

The Barcelona edition was coordinated by the Fundació Privada Knowledge Innovation Market (KIM), the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC) at the facilities of the Escola d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicació i Aeroespacial de Castelldefels (EETAC-UPC).

An excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs, programmers and specialists in the sector to collaborate on their first space project, with a cash prize of €1,500, as well as specialized tutorials.

How Can EU Space Data Benefit the Financial World?

Could Earth observation and GNSS technologies provide solutions to some of the current challenges in insurance, investment, and financial services?

At the 4th CASSINI Hackathon, competing teams will be tasked to create products and services for the finance industry using EU Space data.

Utilising EU Space data

Space is here – and the CASSINI Hackathon series invites participants to make use of the extraordinary data, signals and information from the EU Space Programme, including Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. Hackathon competitors will use Earth observation and GNSS technologies to develop their own innovative solutions for one of three challenges:

  1. Enabling green and sustainable investment. How could you leverage European Space data, information and signals to support sustainable, impactful investments? We’re looking for tools to assist with sustainable operations, carbon offsetting and socially responsible investing.
  2. Innovating financial tools and technologies. This challenge invites participants to build solutions for the future of insurance – creating services and products that support traceability, claims assessments, and agile insurance.
  3. Advancing global financial intelligence. The physical movements of buyers and commodities could be leveraged to offer refined intelligence and mitigate risks for investors, insurers, and government agencies. How would you use EU Space data to advance market intelligence?
