Improving the return on R&D investments

CASSINI Hackathons & Mentoring are part of the CASSINI initiative of the European Commission, which seeks to promote entrepreneurship within the Space sector.

These hackathons bring together young professionals, students, researchers and entrepreneurs interested in software, data, design and business to create innovative solutions with Earth observation data, satellite positioning technologies and satellite communications.

The winners of each hackathon gain access to the program CASSINI Mentoring and in the Global Final, in addition to obtaining the specific prizes of each edition.

How do these hackathons work?

The 7th CASSINI Hackathon will take place from 13 to 15 September 2024, simultaneously in ten locations in Europe. Hundreds of participants will test their skills and work on three common challenges focused on the transition to a sustainable economic system and the protection of the environment.

The organization in our country will be in charge of KIM, Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona, Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya – IEEC i Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya – ICGC.

How to participate?

Register on the official event page or directly through TAIKAI.

Emissions and carbon footprint reporting is increasingly on the global agenda, but especially in Europe due to increasingly demanding environmental regulations, which allow companies to track and manage their carbon emissions effectively, encouraging accountability and promoting sustainability. This practice ensures transparency, supports regulatory compliance and contributes to the collective effort to mitigate climate change.

We encourage participants to dive into the following areas:

  • Carbon Credit Fraud Detection: Find fraudulent abuses of emissions offsets by companies and/or create solutions to increase transparency.
  • Monitoring human-caused emissions: finding innovative ways to measure greenhouse gases in the atmosphere produced by human activities.
  • Reports and certifications: enable private companies to assess CSR/ESG strategies and results.

Their project is to provide early warning of crop infestation through a cost-effective, scalable and environmentally friendly solution. You can see his pitch in the following video:

4th Hackathon Cassini: Space for the Financial World

This event, entitled “Space for the Financial World”, took place from November 4 to 6, 2022, in person and virtually, in 10 European locations simultaneously.

The Barcelona edition was coordinated by the Knowledge Innovation Market Private Foundation (KIM), the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC) at the facilities of the Engineering School of Telecommunications and Aerospace of Castelldefels (EETAC – UPC).

An excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs, programmers and industry specialists to collaborate on their first space project, with a cash prize of €1,500, plus specialized tutorials.

Use of EU spatial data

Space is close to us and the CASSINI program invites participants to make use of data, signals and information from the EU Space Programme, which includes Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. Participants used data from Earth observation and GNSS technologies to develop innovative solutions to one of the challenges.
